WPL 2023: Sania Mirza Joins Royal Challengers Bangalore As Mentor For Women’s Team

Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has been appointed as the mentor for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women’s team ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, marking a bold move for the franchise. Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam winner, most recently played at the 2023 Australian Open where she was the runner-up in the mixed doubles event alongside Rohan Bopanna.

Mirza reacted on her new role as mentor for the RCB women’s team, saying: “It is a pleasure for me to join the RCB women’s team as a mentor. Indian women’s cricket has seen a tectonic shift with the Women’s Premier League, and I am really looking forward to being a part of this revolutionary pitch. RCB and its brand philosophy perfectly resonates with my vision and outlook as that’s how I have approached my playing career and it’s also how I see contributing to sports post my retirement.”

According to the franchise, she is someone who the players can easily relate to and respond to in a team environment. RCB had a highly successful outing at the WPL auction, acquiring star players such as Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, and Richa Ghosh. The auction was a particularly special moment for Mandhana, who was bought for a record amount of Rs 3.4 crore.

He described Mirza as the perfect role model, citing her success as a testament to her hard work, passion, and determination, despite the numerous challenges she has faced throughout her playing career. According to Menon, Mirza is an inspiration to the younger generation and can motivate and encourage the team with her experience as an uber-competitive player who understands how to overcome challenges and handle pressure at the highest level of sports. Her stature, gravitas, and attitude are expected to inspire and bring much-needed panache to transform the team with a bold personality.
