World No 48 Bianca Andreescu defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No. 15 seed, 6-2, 6-4, on Thursday to move to the third round of the current US Open 2022.
The 22-year-old Canadian delivered a brilliant performance to earn a thrilling third-round matchup with Caroline Garcia of France. Andreescu performed a hard and well-rehearsed contest to upset the burgeoning Brazilian, who had just defeated him in a tense three-set encounter in the first round against Harmony Tan.
Haddad Maia has had a great summer, taking home back-to-back championships in Nottingham and Birmingham and reaching the most crucial final of her career in Toronto. In the opening round of the US Open, she defeated Ana Konjuh with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory to gain her maiden victory in the main event.
Andreescu said she preferred playing tough opponents and high-ranked players as it brings out the best of her and keeps her on an A-game. She admits this has pros and cons since she always wants to be like that, no matter who she is against.
Tough draws have always fascinated her, and she feels it heightens the joy of victory in the end.

Andreescu will now take versus Cincinnati champion Garcia, who has the most victories since the beginning of July, after defeating the player with the second-most wins. The No. 18-ranked Garcia defeated Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 to extend her winning streak to 10 games. Garcia is attempting to reach the Round of 16 in New York for the first time in her career as she advances to the third round of the US Open for the fifth time.
Garcia admits to the third round of a grand slam being nothing short of a great battle and said she’s looking forward to it. The contest on Friday is a replay of July’s Bad Homburg championship event. Garcia defeated Andreescu 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 on the grass to claim the first of her three championships this year.
Garcia said she attempts to focus on her game and do what she wants. Bianca, she said, is unequivocally an aggressive and powerful player. However, she would continue with her game style and keep improving on it with each advancing match.
