- NBA seats yet another season record for 3-pointer per game
- Even if no 3-pointers are scored in the final four days of regular season the league’s average will be higher than any other
- In the last game, NBA saw 26,375th 3-pointer
For the 9th season straight, the league has managed to break the record of 3-pointers made per game has been broken. Now, even if zero 3-pointers are made in the final 4 days of the regular season which ends on Sunday, the league’s average in 2020-21 season will be higher than any other season in the history.
The 3-pointers-per-game record was made when Davis Bertans of Washington, made the 26,375th 3-pointer of NBA of the season on Wednesday night. Bertans connected with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter of the Wizards’ game against Atlanta.
On Wednesday, teams entered averaging about 12.7 made 3-pointers per game this season, the previous highest was 12.2 per game which was set in the last season.
In the 2020-21 season, there was no shortage of 3-pointers, leading to the record being broken, yet again.
The Utah Jazz is already assured of breaking the previous record of NBA for most 3-pointers per game by a team over a full season; on Wednesday they entered 16.8 per game, certain to pass the mark of 16.1 per game which was set by the Houston Rockets in the 2018-19.
The record for most 3-pointers made per game by any player in a single season is on the bring of falling as Stephen Curry of Golden Gate is averaging 5.3 which is 0.2 per game more than the previous record held by Curry himself which he set 2 seasons ago.
If Curry can make just 1 more 3-pointer this season in either of Golden State’s two final matches, he will reset his record.
There have also been 13 instances of players making at least 10 3-pointers in a game this season, another record — seven of them came from from Curry.
When we entered this season, there were only 9 instances in NBA history where a team averaged 13.5 3-pointers per game for a full season. There are 11 teams on pace to average that many this season alone.
The rate at which 3-pointers were made per game has almost doubled in the past 10 seasons, from 6.4 per game in the 2011-12 campaign to where it is now (12.7) with 4 days left in the season.
Additionally, the rate of 3s attempted per game, as might be expected, is also on a record-setting run.
Teams, this season, are averaging 34.6 3-pointers tries per game, which is well ahead of the previous record mark of 34.1 per game set last season.
This will be the 10th consecutive season wherein the record for attempted 3-pointers will be remade.
