- Lionel Messi signs a 2 year contract with the French giant PSG
- 20 most valuable football squads in the clubs by net worth
The Argentina forward Lionel Messi, who had to leave Barcelona after 21 years, last week, has signed a two-year contract with the French giants Paris Saint-Germain, with the option to extend the contract by a year, the French club announced on Tuesday. Can this move help PSG top the list of most valuable football squads in the world?
The 34 year old 6 time Ballon d’Or winner will have to part ways with #10 and will be wearing the number 30, the number he had when he began his professional career at Camp Nou, and is set to be unveiled by PSG at a press conference they have called.
In a statement, Messi said, “I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain,” on the club’s website.
Messi added, “Everything about the club matches my football ambitions”.
Messi was given a hero’s welcome by the PSG fans when he arrived in the French capital on Tuesday.
He added, “I know how talented the squad and the coaching staff are here. I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes.”
Messi was on a free agent after his shocking departure from his boyhood club Barcelona last week, landed at Le Bourget airport to the north of Paris on Tuesday afternoon.
There he was greeted by hundreds of PSG supporters who had gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of their new signing. Those fans gathered outside the club’s Le Parc des Princes home and near a plush hotel in the city where Messi along with his wife Antonella and their three children are expected to be staying for the time being.
When asked by reporters if his son would sign for the French club, he replied: “Yes”.
Now that arguably the greatest footballer of all time has joined them, it almost seems inevitable that PSG will be crowned champions of Europe. Such is the remarkable nature of PSG’s transfer activity this summer that many supporters are wondering whether they are breaching the regulations of the Financial Fair Play.
Going by Transfermarkt, PSG’s squad is currently worth a mind-boggling € 917.75 million, which is the second-highest in the Footballing world, while Messi’s transfer value stands at £ 72.00 million.
If you add those two values together, you come to an approximate total of € 1.002 billion, and that brings the Parisians within one world-class player of overhauling Manchester City for the first place.
