The rescheduled second T20 International match between Sri Lanka and India is likely to go ahead on Wednesday i.e. July 28 after the entire Indian squad, barring Krunal Pandya, returned negative result on RT-PCR tests for COVID-19.
The officials from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remain hopeful that the match which was postponed after Krunal tested positive for COVID-19, could be pulled off on Wednesday.
A top official from SLC said, “Hopefully the match could be played today,” even as information has emerged that the SLC officials have shifted Krunal to another hotel. The Indian team members, however, continue to remain at the Taj Samudra Hotel at Galle Street in Colombo.
Mohan de Silva, Secretary of SLC confirmed, “Yes, we have moved Krunal to an intermediate care hotel Mount Lavinia”. Pandya himself did not respond to the queries and it is still not clear how long he will have to remain in isolation.
In the meantime, the negative test results of the rest of the Indian squad is understood to have come past midnight on Tuesday. These tests were subsequent to the negative results of the 8 players which were identified by the medical team who were believed to have come in contact with Krunal.
However, it still is not clear if those eight players will play in the second T20I today or not. Additionally, all of them have been asked to stay indoors and in isolation till further instructions.
The stakeholders and the sponsors of the SLC have been informed that the remaining of two T20Is, in all likelihood, will be played on Wednesday and Thursday as announced.
A stakeholder said, “We should know by afternoon about the fate of the game but there should not be any issues with the game”.
India is playing a 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in the India tour of Sri Lanka campaign and leads the series 1-0. Before this, Indian has already won the ODI series 2-1.
