Highlights:
- India officially knocked out of ICC T20 World Cup 2020
- New Zealand defeated Afghanistan on Sunday, shattering India’s dream of making it to the semi-final
- India will play its last game against Namibia
Dreams of billions of India cricket fans shattered as the Indian cricket team get officially eliminated from the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup after Kane Williamson and company comfortably defeat Afghanistan in Sunday’s match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
Virat Kohli’s men were reliant on Afghanistan upsetting the much-fancied Kiwis, however, that did not turn out to be the case. After restricting the Afghans to just 124, the Ne Zealand batsmen made short work of the target and marched into the semifinals alongside already-qualified Pakistan in Group 2.
After the win over Afghanistan, New Zealand reached eight points having won four out of their five matches in Super 12.
India, on the other hand, lost their first two games and could manage to reach a total of six points that too is subject to them defeating Namibia.
It will now be a dead rubber as the semifinalists have been decided.
The group-stage exit, most definitely, comes as a wake-up call to the Men in Blue, who were touted as firm favourites at the beginning of the ICC T20 World Cup. They were initially humbled by their arch-rivals, Pakistan, before being defeated by the Kiwis.
Those two defeats have sent them crashing out of the tournament.
The match against Namibia will also be Kohli’s last match as the skipper of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game as he had announced prior to the tournament that he will be stepping down as the captain the ICC T20 World Cup.
